Boxers With Sensitive Stomachs – (Reason )

The digestion of Boxers is influenced by many different factors: individual eating habits, preferences, and any health problems. It’s a complex system, which means that when something goes wrong, it can take some time to pinpoint the exact problem.

The sources of stomach sensitivity in particular are quite varied, from bacterial imbalances, parasites, ulcers, allergies, and intolerances to certain ingredients or even symptoms of more serious diseases such as cancers. This huge array of potential problems is just one reason why it’s important to see a vet to improve your Boxers’ digestion.

To begin narrowing it down, veterinarians will often try to classify stomach-related diseases into one of two categories: direct and indirect gastrointestinal diseases. Direct gastrointestinal disorders

are problems that affect, as the word implies, the gastrointestinal tract directly, such as some of the examples mentioned above: parasites, bacterial or viral infections, swallowing foreign material, food sensitivities, inflammatory bowel disease, and ulcers. Indirect gastrointestinal disorders

they are diseases that affect some other system (for example the metabolic or endocrine system) but have a negative, indirect, and in any case important effect on your Boxer’s digestion. These can include metabolic disorders, endocrine problems, kidney or liver dysfunction and pancreatitis.

This can all sound very scary and the help of a professional veterinarian is the best option to identify and correct the root cause of your Boxer’s stomach sensitivity. However, there are some simple actions and remedies you can take immediately to ease their discomfort, regardless of the internal problem.

1) MAKE YOUR HOME “DOG-FRIENDLY”

A common problem among Boxers with sensitive stomachs is what vets call “food indiscretion.” Put simply, this simply means that your pup is eating things he shouldn’t. If you know your Boxer likes to dig through the trash looking for treats, it’s vital that you put some safety measures in place.

Start with the kitchen and bathroom. Make sure all trash and recycling bins have lids and are inaccessible to your pup. Keep the toilet lid down so they don’t jump in for a drink (your human guests will appreciate that too!) and keep the cabinets closed, protecting them from dangerous cleaners and other chemicals.

If you have cosmetics outdoors, especially around the bathtub, make sure they’re out of your pup’s reach. And in the rest of the house, look for electrical cords (aka fun chew toys) and small items that can easily end up on the floor, like coins, bobby pins, and small toys. Any of these can cause severe stomach irritation or more dangerous problems if ingested.

If you live in a large house with a garage and outdoor garden, it will be a little more difficult to control the entire area. Look for anything close at hand that your Boxer might chew or swallow, even out of simple curiosity. In the garage, pay special attention to chemicals like gasoline and antifreeze, as well as nails, screws, and batteries.

If your pup has access to an outdoor yard, check for poisonous plants and fungi. If there are fruit or nut trees, or those that drop seeds, acorns, pine cones, etc., you may want to rake them if you notice any interest from your Boxer. And be very wary of treating your lawn or patio with toxic chemicals that your Boxer may end up licking off their paws. This also applies to interior floor cleaners.

2) SLOW DOWN THE HEAT IN THE MEAL

Once you’ve made sure your Boxer’s environment is as safe as possible, it’s time to start focusing on their food.

Dogs naturally have a tendency to eat their food very quickly, either for fun or as an evolutionary tactic to make sure no one else beats them at their meal. As a result, they may sometimes have trouble walking around during meals and eat too easily.

If a Boxer swallows a large amount of food in a short space of time, it may very well come back to haunt him later when he vomits it up again. This is especially true if they are eating dry food, which tends to expand in the stomach as it mixes with liquid. While eating fast doesn’t cause vomiting, it can still lead to other problems like loose stools, gas, and burping.

Lingering by the bowl over the course of hours is generally not encouraging or healthy behavior. Boxer have evolved to eat quickly as a basic survival strategy, so hesitation can be a sign that they aren’t really enjoying their meal.

Either way, poorly digesting a meal or completely vomiting can leave your Boxer hungry for the next meal. This means they eat even faster, compounding the problem and further irritating their already sensitive stomachs. It’s a vicious circle.

One of the simplest solutions to this problem is to simply give your Boxer smaller, more frequent meals. The typical feeding schedule for dogs over 6 months of age is twice a day, but dogs with sensitive stomachs can thrive on three or even four smaller meals a day.

Experiment a bit and see what your Boxer seems to like. Another approach is to use slow feeding. Indeed, there are bowls that force your puppy to slow down and savor the meal.

3) CHECK OUT BETWEEN MEALS

Leaving meal leftovers for your pup may seem like a fun and natural treat, but be careful, even small amounts of unusual and unsuitable foods can upset your Boxer’s digestion.

A regular diet is the key to controlling and calming a sensitive stomach. Even seemingly innocuous things like meat and vegetables can still be cooked for human consumption with herbs and spices that Boxers aren’t able to digest easily.

In general there is absolutely nothing wrong with giving snacks throughout the day (provided they make up no more than 10% of your Boxer’s daily calories!).

Make sure your Boxer’s regular meals are high-quality food. Commercially produced dry and wet foods (kibble and canned food) are made using dozens of ingredients, many of which aren’t listed on the packaging, and industrial processing methods that can make them difficult to digest, especially by dogs with sensitive stomachs.

Fresh foods, on the other hand, use far fewer ingredients and are cooked much more delicately, at a low temperature, and in the bowl it is easy to understand what has been used.

4) USE SUPPLEMENTS CAREFULLY

While some dietary supplements can absolutely help soothe your Boxer’s sensitive stomach, it’s essential to check with your vet before administering them. Some vitamins and nutrients, when given in large doses, can actually cause serious health problems.

This might be surprising as we tend to think of vitamins as a good thing. But compounds like calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D can cause disease, particularly bone and joint problems if your Boxer consumes them excessively or often enough for them to build up in the body.

That’s not to say you should avoid supplements. If your Boxer’s sensitive stomach is due to food allergies, supplements like Omega 3s, for example, can help treat some of the secondary problems caused by those allergies, including skin, coat, joint and eye problems.

5) TRY DELETION

Another likely cause of your Boxer’s stomach sensitivity is a reaction to something in his diet. If they have a sensitivity, intolerance, or allergy to one of the ingredients in their daily meals, no amount of supplements, dog-proofing, or meal planning will help them get better.

For many dogs in this situation, the elimination diet is incredibly helpful. Eliminating simply means feeding your Boxer a new and balanced diet of simple foods to test their influence on the body. If their symptoms go away, you can slowly add more foods, one by one, and see how they react. When symptoms return, you’ve identified the problematic ingredient.

Just like when your vet recommends a chicken and rice diet for a sick puppy, plain foods are much easier on the digestive system than commercially produced dog foods, as mentioned earlier. The only reason these aren’t sustainable in the long run is that they typically lack the necessary nutrients and vitamins dogs need for a balanced diet.
